VISUAL REVIEW #4

Bichota, a song released in 2020 by Latin pop queen Karol G was not only known for its motivating lyrics but also for the colorful, vibrant, and eye-catching music video that followed it. Bichota is a Spanish term that refers to, "A moment of feeling sexy, flirtatious, daring, strong, empowered, and to a certain extent, [it] translates into personal motivation and self-confidence (Billboard)”. The video definitely translates that to viewers in more than one way through color, outfit choice, design, and direction. The video begins with Karol G riding in on a horse looking extremely powerful and carrying a “bichota” attitude. Immediately, the color scheme is extremely eye-catching and the shots seem to have been given a filter that makes every shot look ethereal and fantasy-like. Each scene illuminates her perfectly too. For example, in the transition scene from her seat in front of the glowing cross to her place in front of headlights with Doberman at her side, the man figure illuminated is hers as if to show her “bichota” stance. The design is something that is pretty consistent across the entire video. They really aimed for an ethereal, enchanted, fantasy theme and stuck with it. In the first scene which was shot with a warm glow, Karol G is pictured under the sun in a pastel cowgirl outfit. Following that, she is placed in an enchanted-looking room complete with a glowing cross and flickering glowing lights flying behind her. Next, she's seen dancing in a car that is illuminated by a neon pink light which leads us to the alleyway where Karol G is standing in a bright orange outfit under dull glowing blue light. She then dances in what looks like a middle eastern themed place but here, everything is simple. She looks very natural in a simple slip dress under warm lighting before we are transported to an ethereal rainforest and Karol G all of a sudden replicates an army leader. She is the only one complete in a bright outfit with the dances behind in very dull, neutral colors. The main thing I noticed about these scenes was the rainforest backdrop. The forest is almost glowing with light and color and effects were even added to have a stray neon pink bird fly by which I thought showed how dedicated the theme of this ethereal backdrop (on all scenes) was. The video ends with us returning to Karol G on her horse again as if to bring the story from beginning to end. The second most prominent thing I noticed was the way the video was filmed and how things transitioned or panned from scene to scene. Even though each scene moves or transitions, the video always refers back to a previous scene as if to integrate them. I also noticed that the scene would go on for a certain amount of time and then the scene would continue but it would begin to flash to clips of what was about to happen. So it would jump back and forth between the current scene and the next until it fully turned to the next scene. However, random frames of previous scenes from the beginning would still flash but they were typically ½ a second or a second long. I thought that was super cool and a really good way to film because it made everything transition smoothly.
