VISUAL REVIEW #7
Skate Kitchen is one of my favorite movies.I have always loved movies created and produced by skate brands/groups like Illegal Civ and in this case, The Skate Kitchen.Besides the movie being amazing, I have also always loved the visuals and the aesthetic of the movies two posters. The movie has an original poster which is the one you see on streaming services. The colors, to me, really make the poster. The poster has a peach background and a light pink hue over all of the visuals with the font being written in a deeper pink. I loved that all of the colors were kept in the same hue or pink family. Another aspect is the visual of the banana with the NYC skyline placed behind it. At first glance, it may seem a little odd that there is a banana on the cover, however, this is an ode to a part of the movie and to a symbol that represents The Skate Kitchen. I loved how the NYC skyline was cropped to be between the space behind the banana. I also think that the way it is slightly lighter and faded out adds to the drama of the films setting. I also really think that having the characters be propped up and sitting on the banana tied the entire visual aesthetic together and made the poster really engaging and fun to look at. The skaters are all positioned in different poses or skate moves which adds a really cool movement aspect to the poster and also introduces the characters before even watching the movie. The font is the same on both posters and I think they chose the right one. To me, the font best resembles that of writing with chalk which is fitting since the movie is mostly filmed in skate parks. The Sundance posters only main difference is the placement of the main character, Camille. She is centered and is the main visual. The positioning of everything on this poster is also very visually engaging to look at. Camille hovers above the title, with the supporting characters placed in front of a NYC setting and hanging off the fence of the skatepark. Spatially, both posters do a really good job of utilizing all of the space in a way that isn't congested but instead draws people in. I also think its super cool that they both preface a lot about the movie and who the main characters are.
